The BICS Deadline Is Coming – And the First Year Could Be Especially Valuable
The first application window for the new British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS) opens on 1 October 2026.
And for manufacturers that could qualify, this first window is particularly important.
Why?
Because successful businesses aren't simply looking ahead to lower electricity costs from April 2027.
There is potentially additional value relating all the way back to April 2026.
BICS starts in 2027. The support doesn't necessarily start there.
The main BICS exemptions are due to begin from April 2027, helping eligible manufacturers reduce some of the policy costs currently built into their electricity bills.
But the Government has recognised that manufacturers need help sooner.
As a result, it has also announced an additional one-off payment in 2027 covering the 2026/27 period.
The intention is for that payment to reflect the support eligible businesses would have received had BICS already been operating.
Put simply:
Qualify for the first year of BICS and there could be value relating back to April 2026 – as well as the ongoing savings beginning in 2027.
For some manufacturers, that could make the first year particularly valuable.
The Government is still finalising the details of how this additional payment will work, so businesses shouldn't assume a particular payment amount yet.
But it's certainly something eligible manufacturers should be aware of.
And there's a deadline
The first BICS application window opens on:
1 October 2026
And closes on:
30 November 2026 at 11:59pm
Successful applicants are expected to receive confirmation of their eligibility in January 2027.
That's why we think manufacturers should be looking at BICS now – rather than waiting until applications are about to close.
Could your business qualify?
BICS is aimed at manufacturers operating within eligible sectors and producing qualifying products in Great Britain.
It won't apply to every manufacturer.
But if your business uses a meaningful amount of electricity, it's worth establishing your position – particularly with the additional 2026/27 payment now on the table.
And you don't need to become an expert in government energy policy to do it.
